What IS Literacy?

Here is an interesting video I found, again via Angela Maiers blog. It's called What Does it Mean to Be Literate in the 21st Century?

While my instant reaction to the word "literacy" is generally: "reading, writing, talking and listening" , when I stop to think about it, literacy to me means so much more. There are all sorts of literacies: financial literacy, media literacy etc. I am particularly fascinated by the techno-literacies. And I love online places that encourage kids to practise multiple literacies, that motivate them to read, write, think and create according to each individual's purpose.

"Literacy" is a word that has neither a single concept, nor a single definition behind it. People use it in different ways. While I don't think we need to get bogged down in definitions, I do think it's valuable to think about what literacy means to us, and what it means to be literate in our society.

I hope you can take the time to watch this short video, because I think it's important for us as parents, as educators, as students even, to be aware of the way literacy is changing, and also the way it is still the same. I will leave you with my favourite quote from
Jason Ohler: "I know only one thing about the technology that awaits us in the future: We will find ways to tell stories with it."

Great focus for 2010!
