Let's Celebrate National Book Shop Day!

National Bookshop Day will be held in Australia on Saturday 11 August, 2012. It's a day to celebrate the role of book shops in our community. While I love libraries, I love bookshops too, both second-hand and new. Tomorrow I plan to celebrate National Bookshop Day by browsing in my local bricks and mortar book store, and buying myself a bookish treat.

Here on the blog, my celebration takes the form of sharing some favourite quotes about books and reading:

“Where is human nature so weak as in the bookstore?”
~Henry Ward Beecher

"I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman, 'Where's the self-help section?' She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose."
~George Carlin

“The Bookshop has a thousand books,
All colors, hues, and tinges,
And every cover is a door
That turns on magic hinges.”
~Nancy Byrd Turner

“She closed the book and put her cheek against it. There was still an odor of a library on it, of dust, leather, binding glue, and old paper, one book carrying the smell of hundreds.”
~Shannon Hale (The Goose Girl)

“The taste for books was an early one. As a child he was sometimes found at midnight by a page still reading. They took his taper away, and he bred glow-worms to serve his purpose. They took the glow-worms away and he almost burnt the house down with a tinder.”
~Virginia Woolf (Orlando)

“Good books don't give up all their secrets at once.”
~Stephen King

“We read to know that we are not alone.”
~William Nicholson

“Reading is the sole means by which we slip, involuntarily, often helplessly, into another's skin, another's voice, another's soul.”
~Joyce Carol Oates

“A mind needs books as a sword needs a whetstone, if it is to keep its edge.”
~George R.R.Martin (Game of Thrones)

“Reading one book is like eating one potato chip.”
~Diane Duane (So You Want to be a Wizard)

“I have always imagined that Paradise will be a kind of library.”
~Jorge Luis Borges

“A room without books is like a body without a soul.”
~Marcus Tullius Cicero

“I find television very educating. Every time somebody turns on the set, I go into the other room and read a book.”
~Groucho Marx

Do you have a favourite quote about books and reading?

What will you do to celebrate National Bookshop Day?

  1. Hi Book Chook.
Thank you for sharing this information - I did not know it was National Bookshop Day.
May I borrow your idea of celebrating with quotes about books and reading? Then I'll share favourite reading quotes on my blog,
Thanks. I so enjoy your posts.

  2. @Coral Sure! It's actually a special day in Australia, but judging by your blog, you agree that reading should be celebrated every day! Nice to meet another "literacy and learning" promoter, Coral.
