Children’s iPad App, Toca Band

App Review by Susan Stephenson,

Here’s a digital toy that’s not just a lot of fun, but offers kids the chance to interact with sounds and play with music creation.

From the developer:

√ Background music, animation and fun sound effects.
√ 16 colorful characters, each with their own unique sounds and moves!
√ 48 fun sound loops that can be put together in endless combinations
√ Change the way each character plays by placing them further up- or downstage
√ Make the song the way you like it – then dance along with your own moves
√ Play and improvise in solo mode by placing a character on the star
√ Combine rhythm instruments with melody and vocals
√ Amazing original graphics
√ No rules or stress – play any way your kids want to!
√ Kid friendly interface!
√ No third-party advertising!
√ No in-app purchases!

What I liked:

I am a huge fan of apps that kids can create something with. Toca Band encourages youngsters to explore music and sounds, and create with them. A lot of thought and creativity has gone into the app’s development. Art work is bright, colourful and quirky. Navigation is straightforward, yet over time, kids will discover more and more while trying new ways of creating. Characters have interesting names like Bimbell (harp) and Shaky McBones (maraca). I love the idea that kids will sing and dance along with these cute characters. Above all, the app is fun!

I would have loved it if the developers had incorporated a way for kids to record their creation and share that composition with others. Another idea would have been to allow kids to use the iPad’s microphone to sing along with their music. However, for the target audience which is kids 5 and under, this may never occur to them. I believe it would broaden the app's application and make it more applicable to older kids though.
