Children’s Book Review, Happy Zappa Cat

Children's Book Review by Susan Stephenson,

Happy Zappa Cat is a children's picture book, written by Steve Webb, illustrated by Magali Le Huche, and published by Simon and Schuster, 2014.

From the publisher: Happy Zappa Cat loves driving his cab through the city, visiting museums and eating at fancy restaurants. But then he makes some new friends who convince him to join him in their wild home. But can a city kitty learn to love the jungle?

Webb has written the story in rhyme. It’s not what I would call easy rhyme and rhythm to read aloud - you might need to practise so you don’t trip over your tongue, the way I did. The illustrations are cheerful and bright, adding meaning and humour to the book. I loved Zappa’s red taxi cab and the giraffes in stripy overalls.

The story of a city cat who tries life in the wild but misses the city, and the cartoonish illustrations combine to make this a happy, feel-good children’s picture book. Do seek it out for your kids. It will make a wonderful reader’s theatre and children will love the tongue twisting refrain: Cat Zappa, happy Zappa, HAPPY ZAPPA CAT!
