Children’s iPad App, Grandpa’s Workshop

by Susan Stephenson,

Grandpa’s Workshop is both an iPad app, and an Android app.

From the developer:

This dancing Grandpa and his wacky tools are ready for fun and projects in the workshop! Grandpa needs help identifying tools, measuring, cutting wood, spotting differences, painting furniture, repairing broken items, and even building an awesome kids’ clubhouse! The game includes seven action-packed mini-games loaded with educational content (number groups, measuring, fractions, colors, observation, spatial relationships) and videos of real tools in action! Ages 3-7.

What I liked:

I honestly don’t believe there is any substitute for one-on-one time spent by kids with their Grandpas. BUT…I like the app anyway. By playing, kids get to interact with an unthreatening and encouraging character, Grandpa, and while doing so, encounter a range of fun and educational activities. Because they are in a workshop, they interact naturally with different tools, and there are videos of related real tools in action. Every so often there are mini games involving measuring, painting, fractions, matching, finding differences, putting things together (jigsaw) and numbers. The activities, though math-based, are fun, and if kids don’t choose correctly, they are encouraged to try again.

There’s humour involved - every so often, Grandpa breaks into a dance, and he also demands high fives where kids can high-five the screen. All the activities seem logical, because we are “helping” Grandpa get things done. Navigation is simple.

Where can I get it?
