Children’s iPad App, Toca Life: Farm

Reviewed by Susan Stephenson,

Toca Life: Farm is an app from developer, Toca Boca. I have previously reviewed Toca Life: City, (Feb 9, 2018) Toca Life: Town, and Toca Band.

From the developer:

- Explore four locations: barn, house, field and store.
- Create stories for 29 new characters plus all the animals!
- Feed the animals, milk the cow and gather eggs from your hens.
- Bottle the milk from the milk tank.
- Help the vet check the animals.
- Let the pigs (or people!) wallow in the mud.
- Clean up different types of animal poop!
- Grab the banjo, fiddle, guitar or washbucket bass and jam into the night!
- Pick fruit in your orchard.
- Farm your crops from planting to harvest.
- Use your tractor's different functions to farm faster!.
- Fire up the food machine to turn your harvest into food.
- Record your stories in the app and share with your friends!
- No time limit or high scores — play for as long as you like!
- No third-party advertising

What I liked:

There are lots of activities to engage kids in this app as you’ll see in the list above. I especially liked the fact that Toca Life: Farm provides a way for children to tell a story with their voice and by moving characters. The end result is a short video that can be saved to the camera roll. Again the emphasis is on children exploring and having fun rather than competing. I love apps that encourage kids to create and use their imaginations rather than raising anxiety levels with zombie slaughter!

Where do I get it?

I’ll be adding this app to my list of iPad apps that kids can create with, and my list of tools that involve kids in digital storytelling.
