Children’s Book Review, I Can Only Draw Worms

Reviewed by Susan Stephenson,

I Can Only Draw Worms is a children’s picture book by Will Mabbitt, published by Penguin (2017.) RRP: $Au 14.99 PB

From the publisher:

This book is about worms. I can only draw worms.

You might think worms are boring - but you'd be wrong. These worms have incredible adventures!

I can't draw those bits, though, so you'll have to imagine them.

A hilarious and superbly silly book that will have children in stitches and begging for more.

What I love about hilarious and silly books is that they LURE KIDS TO READING! Yes, I do love reading them aloud, I adore enchanting my captive audience with the visual and verbal jokes, I even like sharing snippets with suitably startled friends. But most of all I relish finding another book that will convince kids that reading is fun!

I Can Only Draw Worms is, above all, FUN. Children will adore the central premise: the author has many exciting worm adventures to share, ones that involve outer space and unicorns for instance. But alas, he can only draw worms - two rounded, coloured -in, segmented lines. Despite this handicap, we somehow giggle over every page. There are pauses that would be appropriate for young listeners to describe their own imagined worm adventures. I know young creators will be eager to practise worm drawing for themselves, and maybe even come up with details that make it easier for us to tell their own worms apart!

If you’re looking for a special read-aloud, I Can Only Draw Worms should definitely be on your list. Children will also grab it for independent reading or to share with a friend. They will relish the wonderful bright fluoro pinks and yellows, the black contrasts, the counting involved and … all those worms.
